Barry Scherr

After a successful career in commercial real estate, Barry returned to his real loves – writing, reading, and travel adventures. He now lives half the year in Florence in a 400 year-old villa he renovated, surrounded by the history and the drama of the Renaissance. His former neighbor includes Galileo, and the observatory in which he worked. When not in Italy, he cared for his parents as they aged. Today, more than ever, he enjoys all things Italian and the perspective that the Italian way of life inspires.

“When we care deeply about each other, when we raise children selflessly, and when we care for our parents fully, we gain the wisdom of the ages. When we visit Italy, we learn to celebrate life. When we awaken in the process, we recognize ourselves as feeling beings driven to know ourselves. Film is the perfect medium for the stories of our lives to show that awakening.”

“The joy of being together, of food, family and friendship. The power of just being naturally helpful, of seeing life as a celebration. Two, three, even four generations living nearby or even together. The intensity that comes from human beings in contact with their feelings and each other. This is the true Italian experience.”

Today we return often to Italy to be warmed by its family life and friendship, art and beauty, by its dedication to the simple things in life. A century ago immigrants stepped off the ships in New York by the millions filled with dreams of a new world of opportunity and wonder. Combining these two ways of life gives a unique and entertaining notion, that life is a never ending journey.

Italian American Films weaves these tapestries of the Italian and American experiences.
